The Death Penalty

“Louise. This is very… dangerous to say the least.”
“If you tell, hog guts are gonna fall on your head. That’s what happens if you break a pinky promise.” I stuck out my chin. Father Ed rolled his eyes. “Louise, you do understand what will happen if the police find out, right?”
“The police won’t find out. Right, Stevie?” Stevie shook his head vigorously.
“Louise! When, or rather, if they find out, he will be taken to prison. They could give him the death penalty.”
“Nuh-uh. I read about this. Stevie is mentally retarded, and they can’t give mentally retarded people the death penalty.”
“You don’t know that. He could be mentally unstable. They can give them the death penalty.” I closed my eyes, and told my heart to slow down.
“He didn’t do it. I know it. I think it was Jeffie.” As soon as the words left my mouth, Stevie went crazy.
“No, no, no! Don’t! Jeffie says I did it. That’s what I’m supposed to tell people!” He started to cry.
“Who’s Jeffie?” Father Ed asked cautiously.
“My brother.”
