It is snowing as Edwin and I rush out to the car. It’s freezing, so we blast the heat and wait to warm up.

“We’re lucky you have a car.â€? I say. “Since Amber and Ashton are going some place and couldn’t be bothered to take us home.â€?

“Yeah…â€? He says, starting his car. “What did you do when she had to stay after or something and couldn’t take you home?â€?

“I hitched rides with friends or, depending on the weather, walked.â€? I shrug.

“Ouch.â€? He says, glancing over at me before turning out of the school parking lot. “Why does she have a car and not you?â€?

“Well we both got jobs the summer after sophomore year, but I saved all my money and she bought herself a car.â€? I answer.

“You didn’t want a car?â€? He questions.

“Nah. I mean, it’d be nice… but… I don’t know. I never really thought about it… I always just bugged Amber for a ride.â€? I say and laugh. Edwin laughs too.

We pull up at our house and we get out. As I hang up my coat, Edwin disappears somewhere.
